dive bar light source paintings

Since I've been working digitally for quite a while, I've wanted to return to the tactile mess of art making that was so much a part of my 25 year ceramics practice. In this series I developed a vocabulary taken from ceramics: lively, sometimes "brutalized" matte and shiny surfaces, the visibility of the particular hand that made the work, playing with the intersection of intention and serendipity and so on. I chose the subject matter because I am fascinated by dive bars where I've spent a lot of time performing and jamming on my bluegrass fiddle. These places are sanctuaries for people looking to transform themselves for an hour or a night and the light in them creates a particular feeling that I can only describe by trying to paint it.
